What does a Criminologist?

(Criminoloog) As a criminologist, you are responsible for researching various forms of criminal behavior and the underlying causes behind them. Your daily tasks encompass a broad range of activities such as analyzing statistical data, conducting interviews with involved parties, and studying legal documents and criminological literature. In a dynamic environment you often work together with a team of legal experts, sociologists and psychologists. Your findings are not only used to understand criminality, but also to influence policy, develop risk management strategies and make important decisions that can improve the safety and welfare of society. What makes this role particularly interesting is the mix of theory and practical application. You have the opportunity to combine your intellectual curiosity with concrete impact on the lives of people and communities. Through your insights, you can contribute to effective prevention and intervention strategies that help reduce crime. However, criminologists face various challenges. The complexity of human behavior, rapid changes in society and technological advancement require continuous knowledge updates and adaptability. You must be able to ask critical questions, make connections and provide solutions in a sometimes unpredictable context. As a criminologist, you play a crucial role in improving society by providing knowledge and insights that help policymakers shape a safer future.

Required Education

For a career as a criminologist, you need at minimum an HBO bachelor's degree in criminology, law or social sciences, but a university master's degree in criminology or law is strongly preferred. At HAVO/VWO level, the Culture & Society (C&M) profile is most suitable, where subjects like social studies, Dutch and history form a good foundation. Mathematics and research methods are also important for analyzing statistical data. Formal education is almost always required for this role, as in-depth knowledge of criminological theories and research methods is essential.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

As a criminologist, you often start as a research assistant with police, justice departments or research institutes, or as a policy officer with municipalities. With experience, you can advance to senior researcher, project leader or policy advisor, where you lead more complex cases and develop policy. Further career steps lead to positions such as department head, research director or independent advisor. The field offers stable prospects due to increasing attention to crime prevention and evidence-based policy.

AI Impact on the job

AI has significantly changed the role of criminologist by introducing advanced data analysis and pattern recognition. Tasks such as analyzing crime data are enhanced by machine learning, allowing criminologists to now focus more on strategic decision-making and policy. New skills such as data analysis and knowledge of AI tools are becoming increasingly important. The job market for criminologists is expected to change; some positions may be threatened by automation, while there will also be demand for specialists who can effectively deploy AI.
