What does a Central Heating Engineer and Installer?

(CV-monteur en installateur) As a central heating engineer and installer, you travel daily to homes, apartment complexes, or sometimes commercial buildings to install, maintain, or repair heating systems. You fit boilers, heat pumps, and radiators, lay pipework, and connect everything professionally. You then configure the system precisely and check that everything works safely and efficiently. You work with tools such as pipe cutters, soldering equipment, and digital measuring instruments, and you need to be able to read technical drawings to understand how an installation should look. You work largely independently, but you regularly interact with customers who explain what is wrong or ask questions about their new installation. On larger projects, you collaborate with other tradespeople, such as electricians or construction workers. What makes this profession rewarding is that you achieve something tangible every day: you arrive at a house in the morning with no heating, and by the evening the problem is solved. That gives a great sense of satisfaction. At the same time, the work can be physically demanding – you sometimes work in tight spaces, on your knees, or in poorly ventilated boiler rooms. An MBO qualification in installation technology will get you a long way, but the trade is changing rapidly due to the energy transition. Heat pumps and hybrid systems are becoming increasingly common, so further training is important – and very manageable. After a few years of work experience, you can progress to project manager or estimator, or start your own installation company.

A day in the life

Listen: a day as a Central Heating Engineer and Installer0:00 / 0:00

Your day starts early, usually at 7:00 AM. You drive to the warehouse of the installation company in your area. There you pick up the materials you need for the day. You load your van with pipes, fittings (connecting pieces) and tools. Your boss or planner has already scheduled your day in an app on your phone.

Your first job is at a family's home. They have an old boiler that has broken down. You inspect the boiler and look for the cause of the problem. You use a manometer (a tool that measures water pressure) to see what is wrong. Sometimes it is a small repair, but today the entire boiler needs to be replaced. You give your supervisor a quick call to let them know.

Required Education

You study at MBO level 3. This takes 3 or 4 years.
