(Docent Voortgezet Onderwijs) As a secondary education teacher, you are crucial in the development and guidance of students within secondary education. You not only help them acquire knowledge in various subjects, but also in developing social skills and a critical attitude. Teaching high school students requires not only pedagogical skills, but also a thorough understanding of the subject matter and creative teaching methods to inspire and motivate students. Additionally, it's important to create a safe and stimulating learning environment where every student feels heard and valued. For a position as secondary education teacher, an HBO or university education is required, specifically a teacher training program or a subject-specific study followed by an educational master's or PGCE. For HAVO/VWO, the Culture & Society (C&M) profile is most suitable, where subjects such as Dutch, history or social studies are important, depending on the subject you want to teach. A good command of the Dutch language field is essential, as well as pedagogical and didactic skills that are developed during teacher training. In addition to formal qualifications, you must have a teaching qualification to be allowed to teach in Dutch secondary education.
As a starting teacher, you often begin as a substitute or temporary staff member before getting a permanent position. From this role, you can grow into coordinator or mentor functions, department head or team leader within your subject area. Further career steps lead to positions such as deputy director, director or education policy officer. Education offers stable job security with good advancement opportunities, where the demand for qualified teachers remains structurally high due to factors such as aging in the education field.
AI transforms the role of the secondary education teacher by automating administrative tasks and providing personalized learning support. Teachers must develop new skills, such as digital literacy and data analysis, to effectively collaborate with AI tools.
