Required Education

For Public Prosecutor, a university degree in Law (WO) is strictly required, followed by the three-year Raio training (Legal Practice Academy) at the Public Prosecution Service. You need at least VWO with preferably the Economics & Society (E&M) profile, where subjects such as Dutch, history and social studies form a good foundation. After your law studies, you must pass the selection procedure for the Raio training, where you are trained to become a judge, public prosecutor or state attorney. Experience alone cannot replace these formal educational requirements - this is one of the few professions where a specific university education and follow-up training are absolutely necessary.

As a Public Prosecutor, you usually start as a substitute judge or lawyer with several years of experience, or you first work as a court clerk or legal assistant at the Public Prosecution Service. From this top position, you can advance to chief public prosecutor, attorney general or other leadership positions within the Public Prosecution Service. You can also switch to the judiciary as a judge or to the business world as a compliance officer or legal director. The field offers excellent prospects due to the continuing need for law enforcement and the prestigious position within the legal system.
