(Tandarts) A dentist diagnoses and treats problems with teeth, gums and related parts of the mouth. This includes routine checkups, filling cavities, performing root canal treatments and advising on oral hygiene.
For dentist, a university degree in Dentistry (6 years) is strictly required, preceded by HAVO or VWO with the Nature & Health (N&G) profile. During your secondary school, the subjects biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics are essential for admission to the program. After completing the university education, you must register in the BIG-register to be allowed to practice as a dentist. Experience alone can never compensate for formal education - the university degree and BIG-registration are legally mandatory.
As a dentist, you can start as an assistant dentist in a practice or as a locum to gain experience. After several years of experience, you can grow into your own practice owner, specialist (such as orthodontist or oral surgeon) or practice manager of a large dental clinic. You can also choose an academic career in education and research, or specialize in aesthetic dentistry. The demand for dental care continues to grow steadily due to aging population and increased awareness of oral health, which offers excellent career prospects.
AI transforms the role of dentist by automating tasks such as diagnoses, treatment planning and even taking X-rays. Dentists will need skills in data analysis and the use of AI tools to achieve better patient outcomes. The job market outlook is mixed: while AI takes over some routine tasks, demand for specialized dentists who perform complex procedures and manage AI technologies may increase. This requires continuous professional development and adaptation to new technologies.
