What will you learn?

(Health en Social Work) In the AD Health and Social Work program, you learn to work with people in vulnerable situations within the care and welfare sector. You develop practical skills in guidance, support, and care provision to diverse target groups such as the elderly, people with disabilities, young people in trouble, or families who need help. During the program, you study subjects such as communication skills, psychology, social legislation, health promotion, and methodical working. You also learn about social issues, diversity, and intercultural communication. What makes this AD unique compared to a full HBO bachelor's degree is the direct focus on practical applications and rapid entry into the job market. You complete extensive internships at care institutions, welfare organizations, or municipal services where you gain direct experience with client contact. The program combines theoretical knowledge with many practice-oriented projects in which you work out real cases. This AD is perfect for you if you enjoy working with people, are socially engaged, and want to quickly start in a meaningful job within the care and welfare sector.

Required Education

For admission to AD Health and Social Work, you need at least an MBO level 4 diploma in a relevant field such as Social-Pedagogical Work, Care-IG, or Social Care. You can also enter with a HAVO diploma, where the Culture & Society (C&M) profile fits best because this profile contains subjects such as social studies and history that are relevant for understanding social issues and social structures. Subjects such as Dutch and social studies are important because you need to communicate and write extensively about social problems. Some universities of applied sciences require a motivation letter or conduct an intake interview to assess your motivation and suitability for working in the care and welfare sector. Alternative admission is possible through an entrance exam or if you have relevant work experience in care, for example as a caregiver or pedagogical employee, which allows you to be admitted through an EVC procedure (Recognition of Prior Learning).

Career Prospects

After completing this AD, you can immediately start working as a social-pedagogical worker, supervisor in disability care, youth worker, or family coach at organizations such as Pluryn, Rijnhoven, or municipal services for Youth & Family. You can also work as a social support worker, peer support specialist, or activity supervisor in residential care centers and day activity locations. The starting salary ranges between €2,200 and €2,800 gross per month, depending on the employer and collective labor agreement. For career advancement, you can become a team leader or coordinator after several years of experience, or specialize in specific target groups such as youth with psychiatric problems. An important possibility is progression to a full HBO bachelor's degree in Social Work and Services or Social Work, often with a one-year reduction, which gives you access to positions as a social worker or policy officer.

Impact of AI on this program

AI can support AD Health and Social Work with case management and signaling, but the core — human contact, empathy, and building trust — cannot be automated. Ethical knowledge about AI deployment with vulnerable groups becomes important.
