You start the week in the classroom on Monday. You cover theory about electrical engineering — basically how electricity works. Your teacher explains how current flows through a cable. After that, you do exercises on safety rules, the guidelines that keep you safe when working with hazardous materials. You also learn to read technical drawings, so you know what an installation is supposed to look like.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, you spend a lot of time in the practicum [hands-on workshop at school]. You work with real cables, power sockets, and fuse boxes. Together with a few classmates, you set up a small electrical installation. You also practise diagnostic measuring — that means using measuring equipment to find faults in a system. Your teacher walks around and gives tips when you get stuck.
For the MBO Electrician program, you generally need a VMBO diploma, with a VMBO-TL, VMBO-GL or VMBO-KB diploma with the Technology sector being most suitable. If you have a HAVO or VWO diploma, the Nature & Technology (N&T) profile fits best with this technical education. Mathematics and physics are important subjects that prepare you well for the electrotechnical aspects of the program. If you are 21 years or older without the right prior education, you can often still be admitted through an entrance exam or bridging course.
