A week as a student

Listen: a week in Police Academy0:00 / 0:00

Monday starts early. You have physical training, which means working out and building your fitness. You run, do strength exercises, and train your stamina. This is mandatory, because as a police officer you need to stay in shape. After that, you have a class on police and law, where you learn which rules the police must follow.

On Tuesday you go to a communication skills class, which means learning how to talk to people in difficult situations. You practise in small groups using role plays, where you act out a real-life situation. Wednesday is all about ethics and integrity, which is about acting honestly and correctly. You discuss dilemmas, meaning tough choices, with your classmates. Together you think about what you would do in a certain situation.

After completing the MBO programme in Law & Administration at the Police Academy, graduates have various career opportunities available within law enforcement and public safety. The most obvious position is that of police officer, working at one of the regional police units. Within the police organisation, various specialisations are possible, ranging from community officer to detective, traffic corps or intervention teams. The public sector also offers opportunities at municipalities, provinces or central government, for example in departments dealing with safety, licensing or supervision. Private security organisations and security consultancy firms are likewise potential employers. Expected developments The prospects for graduates have improved further in recent years. Structural additional investments in the Dutch police force have led to an expansion of police capacity, which considerably increases the demand for newly trained professionals. The ongoing demand for security professionals and the ageing workforce within the police organisation reinforce this picture. New forms of crime such as cybercrime and the increased focus on community-oriented policing furthermore create additional employment opportunities. Points of concern remain the increasing workload, the emotional demands of the work and the potential budgetary uncertainty in the longer term, which may bring challenges regarding staff retention.

Impact of AI on this program

AI has a significant impact on the police academy. The study content can expand with new topics such as data visualization, algorithmic decision-making and cybersecurity, making future officers better prepared for technological developments. Topics like ethics in AI and the use of machine learning in crime fighting are becoming increasingly relevant. This makes graduates more attractive to employers looking for innovative solutions within enforcement, which can lead to improved career prospects in an increasingly digitized world.
