The best regions for a long trip

More and more people want to travel for longer periods. Not a short vacation, but really getting away for a while. Two months where you don't have to rush, but have the time to stay somewhere and really get to know a place. Yet you see that many people automatically end up at the same destinations. Thailand, Bali or Vietnam are enormously popular. That's understandable because it's affordable and you can travel there easily. But because of that, you also miss many other places that are just as suitable and often more interesting when you travel longer. Below you'll find a number of regions that are perfect for a two-month trip. Not only because they're beautiful, but because they have enough variety, rhythm and possibilities to really stay there for a while without getting bored.

Morocco

Morocco is a destination that's often seen as a short trip, but is actually very suitable for a longer journey. The country has much more layers than you think at first glance.

If you start in cities like Marrakech or Fez, you immediately end up in a totally different world. Narrow streets, busy markets, sounds and smells that constantly stimulate you. In the beginning that can be overwhelming, but after a few days you start to understand the rhythm and it becomes interesting to move through it.

What makes the country suitable for a longer trip is that you can completely switch after that. From the cities you can go into the Atlas Mountains, where the pace suddenly becomes much calmer and you can spend days hiking or staying in small villages. In winter you can even ski there. Even further south you end up in the Sahara, where you literally have nothing except sand, silence and stars. On the coast, at places like Essaouira, the atmosphere changes again. There it's more about relaxing, eating and slow living.

Activities that fit well with this region include:
  • walking around in medinas and local markets
  • multi-day trips in the Atlas Mountains
  • sleeping in the desert
  • surfing or relaxing on the coast
Morocco is especially suitable for people who aren't afraid of a bit of chaos and cultural differences, and who find it interesting to adapt to a completely different environment.

What you'll spend approximately for 2 months:
  • Budget: €1,200 - €1,800
  • Normal: €1,800 - €2,800
  • Luxury: €3,000 - €5,000

Mexico & Guatemala

If you have two months, the combination of Mexico and Guatemala is one of the most complete trips you can make. What makes this region so strong is that you constantly feel like you're ending up in another world, while you're actually just traveling through the same region.

In Mexico you can start in Yucatán, where you have crystal-clear cenotes, tropical beaches and ancient Maya cities like Chichén Itzá. Then you can travel on to places like Oaxaca, where food and culture are central, or to Mexico City, which is big and dynamic again.

When you then travel into Guatemala, the pace changes. Everything feels calmer, rawer and less developed. Around Antigua you can climb volcanoes and at Lake Atitlán you can stay in small villages for days without really having a plan.

What makes this region so suitable for a longer trip is that you're constantly being stimulated again. You keep moving, but without it feeling rushed.

Activities you can do here:
  • swimming in cenotes and relaxing on beaches
  • visiting ancient Maya ruins
  • climbing volcanoes in Guatemala
  • staying around Lake Atitlán and discovering local villages
This region is ideal for people who want lots of variety and enjoy continuing to discover instead of staying in one place.

What you'll spend approximately for 2 months:
  • Budget: €1,800 - €2,500
  • Normal: €2,500 - €3,800
  • Luxury: €4,000 - €6,500

South Africa

South Africa feels different from many other destinations, especially because you're not dependent on buses or tours here. You usually travel by car, and that changes everything. It gives you freedom. You decide where you stop, how long you stay somewhere and which route you take. That makes a trip here feel less like "traveling" and more like living on the road.

You can for example start in Cape Town, where you combine mountains, sea and city. Then you drive along the Garden Route, where you encounter small coastal towns, nature parks and beaches. If you travel further north, you can do safaris in areas like Kruger National Park.

What makes this region unique is that in one trip you experience both modern cities and pure nature. You can be in a wine region one week and spotting wild animals the next week.

Activities that fit well here:
  • road trips along the coast (Garden Route)
  • safaris and visiting game parks
  • hiking in nature areas
  • wine tastings in regions like Stellenbosch
South Africa is especially suitable for people who love freedom and enjoy determining their own trip, without being dependent on a fixed route.

What you'll spend approximately for 2 months:
  • Budget: €2,000 - €2,800
  • Normal: €2,800 - €4,200
  • Luxury: €5,000 - €8,000

The Balkans

Many people don't think of Europe when planning a long trip, but the Balkans are perfect for that. It feels familiar, but at the same time completely different from Western Europe. What makes this region interesting is that you can combine many countries without long distances. Within a few hours you travel from mountains to coast or from a city to a nature area.

In Albania, for example, you find beaches that remind you of Greece, but quieter and cheaper. In Montenegro you have impressive bays and mountains, and in Bosnia you notice a strong cultural and historical influence again. Because everything is relatively close by, you can keep the pace low. You don't have to be constantly on the road, and that makes it ideal for a longer trip.

Activities that fit well here:
  • road trips along the coast of Albania and Montenegro
  • hiking in mountain areas
  • exploring historical cities and villages
  • relaxing on beaches without mass tourism
The Balkans are especially suitable for people who want to travel, but don't necessarily want to go to the other side of the world. You have comfort, but also enough new stimuli.

What you'll spend approximately for 2 months:
  • Budget: €1,500 - €2,200
  • Normal: €2,200 - €3,200
  • Luxury: €3,500 - €5,500

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a destination that's often overlooked, but works really well for a two-month trip. The island is small, but enormously varied. What makes it special is how quickly the landscape changes. Within a few hours you go from tropical beaches to mountains with tea plantations or national parks with wild animals.

That makes it feel like you're traveling multiple countries in one, without having to cover big distances. That makes traveling less tiring and gives you more time to really stay somewhere. You can for example start on the coast, then travel by train through the mountains and finish with national parks or temples.

Activities that fit well with Sri Lanka:
  • surfing and relaxing on the south coast
  • train journeys through the mountains and tea fields
  • safaris in national parks
  • visiting temples and cultural sites
Sri Lanka is especially suitable for people who want to see a lot, but don't want to constantly be moving. You get variety, but with peace.

What you'll spend approximately for 2 months:
  • Budget €1,400 - €2,000
  • Normal: €2,000 - €3,000
  • Luxury: €3,500 - €6,000

What you can take away from this

The best region for a long trip isn't necessarily the most famous or cheapest. It's the place where you have enough variety to keep two months interesting, but also enough peace to not constantly be on the road. Many of these regions are mentioned less than Asia, but often offer more balance. And ultimately that's what makes a long trip good. Not how much you see, but how you experience the time.
