(AI Governance Lead) As an AI Governance Lead, you develop your organization's strategic AI policy and ensure compliance with the EU AI Act. You establish ethical frameworks for AI development, manage risk assessments of AI systems, and maintain central registers of all AI models within the organization. You work closely with legal teams, IT departments, risk management, and the boardroom to integrate AI governance into business processes. Additionally, you conduct due diligence on AI suppliers, implement human oversight mechanisms, and train employees in responsible AI use.
You have completed a WO degree, preferably in legal studies, business administration, computer science, or a technical field. The E&M or N&T profile from VWO forms a strong foundation due to the combination of analytical thinking, mathematics, and technology insight. Additional certifications in AI ethics, privacy (such as CIPP/E), or governance frameworks like COBIT are valuable. Experience in senior management positions can partially compensate for formal legal education, but thorough knowledge of laws and regulations remains essential.
You often start as a compliance officer, risk manager, or legal advisor with a focus on technology. Through roles as privacy officer, data governance specialist, or IT risk manager, you build expertise in tech regulation. With senior management experience and specialization in AI ethics, you grow into AI Governance Lead. Next steps are Chief AI Officer, Chief Risk Officer, or strategic advisory roles at regulatory bodies and consultancy firms.
AI transforms your role from reactive compliance work to proactive strategic advisory. Automated compliance monitoring tools help you track AI models and risks in real-time. You use AI-driven analytics to identify compliance gaps and can recognize patterns in AI risks through machine learning. At the same time, your role grows as AI itself becomes more regulated, making your expertise increasingly strategic for organizations.
