(AI Red Teamer) As an AI Red Teamer, you test the safety and robustness of AI models by executing advanced adversarial attacks. You develop and implement prompt injection techniques, jailbreaks, data poisoning attacks, and model extraction methods to identify vulnerabilities in large language models and other AI systems. You work closely with AI developers, cybersecurity teams, and product managers to report findings and formulate security recommendations. Through your expertise at the intersection of cybersecurity and AI research, you prevent vulnerable models from being deployed in production.
For this role, you need at least an HBO or WO degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence, or a related technical field. A VWO profile in Science & Technology (N&T) forms the ideal foundation due to its strong focus on mathematics, physics, and computer science. Specific knowledge of machine learning, cryptography, and ethical hacking is essential. Due to the specialized nature of this field, extensive practical experience in AI security and red teaming can sometimes compensate for formal certifications.
Your career typically begins as a Cybersecurity Analyst or Machine Learning Engineer with a focus on security. You then progress to junior AI Security Researcher or Penetration Tester. As a Senior AI Red Teamer, you can advance to Lead AI Security Architect, Principal AI Safety Researcher, or Chief AI Security Officer at major tech companies. Additionally, you can specialize in consulting or start your own AI security company.
Paradoxically, the rise of AI makes your role as an AI Red Teamer even more essential. As AI models become more powerful, the complexity of potential attacks also increases, making your expertise in adversarial testing indispensable. AI tools do help you automate certain attack patterns and generate test scenarios. Your role evolves from manual testing to developing automated red teaming systems that can continuously evaluate new AI models for safety.
