What will you learn?

(Artificial Intelligence) The Artificial Intelligence program at university offers a challenging and multidisciplinary approach to developing intelligent systems. Students explore a wide range of topics, from machine learning and natural language processing to robotics and computer vision. The program emphasizes both theoretical and practical skills, enabling students to solve complex problems and drive innovation across various sectors. Throughout their studies, students have the opportunity to collaborate on projects with companies and research institutions, preparing them for a career in one of the fastest-growing fields in technology. The combination of technical expertise and creative problem-solving makes the program attractive to both technically and analytically minded students.

A week as a student

Listen: a week in Artificial Intelligence0:00 / 0:00

Your week starts on Monday with a lecture on Machine Learning. A lecture [hoorcollege] is a large class where a teacher explains the material and you listen and take notes. Sometimes up to a hundred students sit in on one of these. The teacher explains how a computer program learns from data — large amounts of information. After the lecture, you work through the material on your own, because a wo [university] degree expects a lot of self-study.

On Tuesday you have a seminar [werkcollege] on Data Science. In a seminar you work in a small group on exercises. You learn how to analyse large amounts of data and present it in a clear way. Wednesday is all about Natural Language Processing — in other words, how computers understand human language. You do a practical [practicum], a computer exercise, where you write a simple programme that recognises text. You work together with a fellow student.

Required Education

For the WO Artificial Intelligence program, you need a VWO diploma or a completed HBO foundation year. The Nature & Technology (N&T) subject profile fits best with this degree, as it provides you with a strong foundation in mathematics and natural sciences. Mathematics B is mandatory for admission, and knowledge of physics and/or computer science is strongly recommended due to the technical nature of the program. If you don't have a VWO diploma, you may also be eligible through a 21+ exam or colloquium doctum, where you must demonstrate your aptitude for university education.

Career Prospects

Graduates of the Artificial Intelligence program find work in a broad spectrum of sectors where intelligent systems and data analysis play an important role. Tech companies, both established names and start-ups, form an important employer for AI specialists involved in product development and algorithm optimization. Additionally, consultancy firms offer challenging projects where AI solutions are implemented for diverse clients. Typical positions include Machine Learning Engineer, Data Scientist, AI Research Scientist, and Product Manager for AI applications. Demand for AI expertise is also growing in sectors such as financial services, healthcare, automotive, and e-commerce. Many graduates choose roles in research and development, working on cutting-edge technologies within universities or R&D departments of large organizations. The versatility of the program also opens doors to more strategic positions, where technical knowledge is combined with business management. Some graduates start their own AI company or work as freelance consultants for specific projects. Expected Developments Opportunities lie in the continued digitalization of business processes and the growing acceptance of AI applications in traditional sectors. Developments such as generative AI and edge computing create new specialization areas. Threats include increasing competition due to the rising number of graduates and rapid technological changes that require continuous upskilling.

Impact of AI on this program

The rise of AI has a profound impact on the "WO Artificial Intelligence" study program. The curriculum content evolves rapidly, with a growing focus on ethics in AI, accountability, and the societal impact of technology. New topics such as neural networks, behavioral AI, and quantum computing are becoming increasingly relevant. For graduates, career prospects are changing because there is an increasing demand for AI specialists in diverse sectors such as healthcare, finance, and digital marketing, offering more variety and potential for innovation.
