What does a Mayor?

(Burgemeester) As mayor, you lead a municipality and are the public face to the outside world. You manage the board of mayor and aldermen, chair city council meetings, and make important administrative decisions. In crisis situations, you have final responsibility for public order and safety, working closely with police, fire department, and other emergency services. You maintain intensive contact with residents, businesses, social organizations, and other government bodies to represent the interests of your municipality.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

As mayor, you usually come from positions such as alderman, municipal secretary, or senior policy advisor at a municipality or province. You can advance to mayor of a larger municipality, King's Commissioner, or transition to top positions at national government or large public organizations. Career steps often progress through local politics, administrative experience, and relevant master's degrees. The field offers stable prospects, with experienced administrators remaining in demand for complex societal challenges.

AI Impact on the job

AI supports you in analyzing large amounts of data about your municipality, such as demographic trends and satisfaction surveys among residents. Chatbots can answer simple questions from citizens, giving you more time for complex administrative tasks. Predictive algorithms help you anticipate societal developments and plan municipal policy. However, personal contact with residents and making political decisions remain typically human tasks that cannot be taken over by AI.
