(Doktersassistent) As a doctor's assistant, you are the hub of a general practice. You receive patients, manage the schedule, perform simple medical procedures (such as measuring blood pressure) and assist the general practitioner.
For the position of doctor's assistant, you need at least an MBO level 2 education, such as the "Doctor's Assistant" or "Medical Administrative Assistant" program. For these programs, a HAVO diploma is usually required, preferably with the Nature & Health profile due to subjects like biology and chemistry. VMBO-TL with the Health & Welfare sector can also provide access to the MBO program. A good command of Dutch is essential for communication with patients and maintaining medical records.
As a doctor's assistant, you can start from an MBO education or as a career changer with experience in healthcare or administration. After several years of experience, you can grow into a practice manager, where you coordinate the entire practice operations, or specialize as a practice supporter (POH) for chronic diseases or mental health care. A transition to health insurance companies, healthcare consultancy or training functions is also among the possibilities. The demand for qualified doctor's assistants remains high due to aging population and growth of primary care.
AI transforms the role of doctor's assistants by automating routine tasks, such as scheduling appointments and managing patient data. This shifts the focus to more complex tasks, such as patient support and communication, which requires skills in data analysis and technology. While some jobs may disappear due to automation, the demand for doctor's assistants with digital skills is growing. The job market outlook is positive, provided professionals continue to adapt to new technologies.
