What does a RPA Developer?

(RPA Developer) As an RPA Developer you design and develop automated solutions that take over repetitive administrative processes from employees. You analyze existing work processes, identify automation opportunities and build software robots using tools like UiPath, Blue Prism or Microsoft Power Automate. You work closely with business analysts and process experts to optimize workflows and often combine RPA with AI technologies for intelligent document processing and decision-making. Additionally, you maintain existing automations, resolve technical issues and train end users in using the automated processes.

Required Education

For this position you usually need an HBO degree in Computer Science, Business Administration, Technical Business Administration or a comparable field. A HAVO diploma with the Economics & Society (E&M) or Science & Technology (N&T) profile forms a good foundation for further education. Subjects like mathematics, computer science and economics are important for understanding both the technical and process aspects. Relevant work experience with process analysis or software development can compensate for formal education, especially in combination with certifications from RPA platforms.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

You often start as a Junior RPA Developer or Process Analyst, where you learn to work with RPA tools and build simple automations. As a Mid-level RPA Developer you work independently on more complex projects and mentor junior colleagues. The next step is Senior RPA Developer or RPA Architect, where you design the technical architecture of automation solutions. Eventually you can grow to RPA Lead, Automation Manager or even Chief Automation Officer, where you determine the automation strategy for the entire organization.

AI Impact on the job

AI strengthens your work as an RPA Developer by enabling Intelligent Process Automation (IPA), where you can extend robots with machine learning and natural language processing. You increasingly use AI for document understanding, where unstructured data is automatically extracted and processed. Chatbots and virtual assistants become part of your toolkit for customer interactions. At the same time, you need to develop skills in no-code/low-code platforms that enable business users to build simpler automations themselves, shifting your focus to more complex and strategic automation projects.
