What does a Political Scientist?

(Politiek Wetenschapper) As an experienced Political Scientist, you are the architect of insights into complex political structures and processes. On a daily basis, you dive deep into current political issues, analyze policy documents, and study the impact of political decisions at various levels. You work closely with government institutions, NGOs, and business leaders to provide them with valuable advice that helps them make strategic choices. You play a crucial role in translating political dynamics into understandable and applicable strategies. In this role, you operate in a dynamic and often hectic environment, where you collaborate with diverse stakeholders, from policymakers to business strategists. You have the opportunity to apply your knowledge and expertise to important themes such as sustainability, public health, and economic development, while building a network of influential professionals. What makes this role special is the chance to directly contribute to policy formation and improving society. Your analyses and advice can lead to change and improvements within both the public and private sector. At the same time, however, you face challenges such as political tensions, changing regulations, and unpredictable developments, which test your critical thinking skills and adaptability. As a Political Scientist, you have the unique opportunity to make an impact in an ever-changing world, by bridging politics and business and thus making a valuable contribution to the strategic decision-making of your clients.

Required Education

For the position of Political Scientist, a university bachelor's and master's degree in Political Science, Public Administration, or related social sciences is required. At HAVO/VWO level, the Culture & Society (C&M) profile is most suitable, with subjects such as history, social studies, and Dutch as a strong foundation. Economics and mathematics are also valuable for analyzing policy effects and research methods. While a university education is standard, extensive experience in the public sector or at research institutions and relevant continuing education can sometimes serve as an alternative.

Further career opportunities lie in management functions such as research director, director at consulting firms, or specialist roles at international organizations. The field offers stable prospects due to the constant demand for political expertise in an increasingly complex world.
