What will you learn?

(Blockchain Technologie) In this HBO degree program, you learn blockchain technology from the ground up. You develop skills in distributed systems, cryptography, and smart contracts. The program combines programming (Solidity, JavaScript) with business administration and legal aspects. You work on practical projects such as cryptocurrency applications, supply chain tracking, and decentralized apps (DApps). You also learn about consensus algorithms, tokenomics, and blockchain implementation across various sectors including fintech, healthcare, and logistics.

A week as a student

Listen: a week in Blockchain Technology0:00 / 0:00

Your week starts on Monday morning with a lecture on Cryptography and Security. The lecturer explains how data is encrypted so that other people can't read it. It's a big group of around forty students. Afterwards, you take notes and read more of the study material at home. In the afternoon, you work on your own on an assignment about how blockchain networks stay secure.

On Tuesday, you have a Programming practical. You write code in Solidity, a programming language made specifically for blockchain. You create small programs that carry out agreements automatically — these are called smart contracts. On Wednesday, you meet up with your project group of four or five students. Together, you work on a real assignment, for example an app that tracks where products in a retail chain come from.

Career Prospects

After graduating, you can work as a blockchain developer, smart contract engineer, cryptocurrency consultant, DeFi specialist, or blockchain architect. Roles such as Web3 product manager or blockchain security auditor are also among the possibilities. However, demand for blockchain specialists fluctuates significantly: following the crypto winter of 2022–2023, major players such as Coinbase, Kraken, and ConsenSys substantially reduced their workforces, and large tech companies — including Google, Meta, and Twitter/X — scaled back or significantly curtailed their Web3 initiatives. Explosive, broad-based growth is therefore no longer a given. The MiCA regulation, which came fully into force at the end of 2024, has further structured and consolidated the market, leading to more selective demand rather than a new wave of growth. Solid opportunities therefore lie primarily in specific niches, such as enterprise blockchain, supply chain applications, and regulatory compliance — driven in part by that same European legislation. Specialists who feel at home in these areas can count on above-average salaries and remain relevant in a market that is less broadly vibrant, but still has a concrete need for deep expertise in targeted areas.
