(AI Engineer) As an AI Engineer, you develop intelligent applications by integrating existing AI models like GPT, Claude, and Gemini into practical software solutions. You work daily with APIs, design complex prompt strategies, and build RAG systems that combine external data with AI models for more accurate results. Additionally, you develop autonomous AI agents that can perform tasks and evaluate the performance of AI systems. You collaborate closely with product owners, backend developers, and data engineers to realize robust AI applications that actually add value for end users.
For this role, you need at least an HBO degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Engineering, or a comparable technical field. The N&T profile provides the best preparation through its strong focus on mathematics, physics, and computer science. Subjects like programming, algorithms, statistics, and logic are essential. Relevant work experience with Python and machine learning can sometimes compensate for a lower education level, but the technical complexity of modern AI systems usually requires a solid theoretical foundation.
Your career often starts as a Junior Developer or Data Analyst where you gain basic experience with programming and data analysis. From the position of AI Engineer, you can grow to Senior AI Engineer where you design more complex architectures and guide teams. Next steps are Lead AI Engineer or AI Architect, where you determine the technical strategy and design enterprise AI solutions. At larger organizations, you can also go in the direction of AI Product Manager, where you form the bridge between technology and business.
