What will you learn?

(Data Science) The Data Science program focuses on developing the skills and knowledge needed to collect, analyze and interpret data. The program offers students the opportunity to work with complex datasets and apply techniques for data visualization and machine learning. This program covers not only the technical side of data analysis, but also the ethical and societal implications of data processing. Students learn how to convert data into useful insights for various sectors, such as healthcare, finance, and marketing. The program includes hands-on projects and collaborations with companies, so students gain practical experience in the field. After completing the program, they are well prepared to contribute to solving current issues through data.

A week as a student

Listen: a week in Data Science0:00 / 0:00

Monday starts with a Statistics lecture. This subject is about maths and probability. Your lecturer explains how to find patterns in large amounts of data — lots of numbers and information. You listen and take notes. After that, you work in a small group on an assignment. You practise formulas on your laptop.

On Tuesday you have a Databases and SQL practical. SQL is a computer language you use to look up information in a database — a large digital storage system. You type in commands and see the results straight away. Wednesday is all about Data Visualisation, which means turning numbers into charts and visuals. You learn how to present data clearly to others. You do this together with your project group.

Required Education

For admission to HBO Data Science you need at least a HAVO diploma, VWO diploma or MBO-4 diploma. The subject profile Science & Technology (N&T) or Economics & Society (E&M) fits best with this program, because you need both analytical skills and technical knowledge. Mathematics B is usually mandatory, and subjects like computer science or physics are strongly recommended due to the technical nature of the study. If you don't have a suitable diploma, you can also enter through the 21+ test or colloquium doctum.

Career Prospects

After completing the HBO Data Science program, diverse career opportunities open up in a broad spectrum of sectors. Graduates can work as data analyst, data scientist, business intelligence specialist or machine learning engineer. These positions can be found in virtually all industries, from financial services and healthcare to retail, logistics and government agencies. Many graduates find work at technology companies, consultancy firms and large enterprises that want to improve their data-driven decision making. Starting data scientists can expect competitive salaries and good advancement opportunities to senior positions or specialist roles in areas like cybersecurity or artificial intelligence. Starting your own consultancy firm or working as a freelance specialist is also among the possibilities. The combination of technical skills and ethical awareness developed during the program makes graduates valuable to organizations that want to handle data responsibly. Expected Developments Opportunities lie in the growing digitalization and increasing need for data-driven decision making in all sectors. New developments like generative AI create additional specialization opportunities. Threats include rapid technological changes that require continuous training and increasing automation of basic data analyses, shifting the focus toward more complex and strategic work.

Impact of AI on this program

AI has a significant impact on the HBO Data Science study program. The content of the study shifts toward more advanced machine learning algorithms and big data analysis. New topics like ethics in AI, interpretation of AI models and automation of data analysis become increasingly relevant. Moreover, the growing demand for AI experts and the application of data science in diverse sectors provide better career prospects for graduates, where they often have access to stronger and more diversified positions within technology and industry.
