(Biochemicus) Biochemists study chemical processes in living organisms, with the aim of understanding biological functions and developing new therapies.
For biochemist, a university education in the field of biochemistry, chemistry, biology or molecular sciences is usually required. You need HAVO or VWO with the Nature & Technology (N&T) profile, where mathematics B, chemistry and physics are essential subjects. Biology is also strongly recommended due to the biological focus of the field. An HBO education in applied chemistry or life sciences can provide access to more technical or supporting functions within biochemistry, but for independent research, university level is standard.
As a biochemist, you often start as a research assistant or junior analyst in laboratories of pharmaceutical companies, biotech companies or research institutes. With experience, you can grow to senior biochemist, project leader or R&D manager, where you will lead your own research teams. Further career opportunities lie in scientific directorship, product development or even starting your own biotech company. The field offers excellent prospects due to the growing demand for new medicines, diagnostic tools and biotechnological solutions.
AI transforms the role of biochemists by automating tasks such as data analysis and pattern recognition, allowing them to focus on innovative research and complex problem-solving. New skills such as knowledge of machine learning and data visualization become crucial. The job market will experience a shift where demand for highly qualified biochemists who can integrate AI tools increases, while routine tasks may become obsolete, leading to a more specialized and dynamic workforce.
