Required Education

To become a surgeon you need a university education in Medicine (WO), followed by a lengthy surgical specialization training of at least 6 years. For admission to Medicine, a VWO diploma is required, preferably with the Nature & Health (N&G) profile, including the subjects mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. These subjects are essential because they form the foundation for understanding medical processes and pharmacology. Work experience cannot compensate for the formal educational requirements here - a complete university medical education and recognized specialization are legally required to practice as a surgeon.
