What does a Children, Youth and Family Therapist?

(Kinderen, Jeugd en Gezin Therapeut) As a Children, Youth and Family Therapist, you play a crucial role in improving the mental well-being of children, young people and their families. Your daily activities consist of providing individual therapies and group sessions that are tailored to the specific needs of your clients. You work an average of 28-36 hours per week and maintain a flexible schedule to accommodate your clients' agendas. You are responsible for developing treatment plans, conducting evaluations and maintaining progress reports. Additionally, you serve as the point of contact for parents and caregivers, supporting and advising them in parenting and dealing with the challenges they encounter. You work in a multidisciplinary environment, where you regularly collaborate with schools, general practitioners and other healthcare professionals to ensure an integrated approach. The direct contact with children and families makes this role particularly dynamic and varied. You have the opportunity to make a significant impact on clients' lives by helping them overcome emotional, social and behavioral problems. The challenges within this role are diverse; you may be confronted with complex family dynamics, resistance to therapy, and the need to quickly switch between different treatment methods. Nevertheless, this role is enormously rewarding, with the main motivation being the growth and development you can see in your clients. As a Children, Youth and Family Therapist, you not only work on today's solutions, but also build a positive future for the growing generation.

Required Education

For this position, you need at least an HBO bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Applied Psychology, Pedagogy, or Social Work, but often a university master's degree in Psychology or Special Educational Needs is required. If you are doing HAVO/VWO, the Nature & Health (N&G) profile is most suitable, where subjects like biology and mathematics are important for your further studies. After your education, you often need to complete additional specialization in child and youth therapy and register with a professional association. Work experience alone is not sufficient for this position due to strict quality requirements and registration obligations in mental healthcare.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

You can reach this role from positions such as youth worker, educational assistant or support worker in youth care. As an experienced therapist, you can advance to team leader, treatment coordinator or specialist in a specific therapy area such as trauma or family therapy. Further career steps lead to management positions such as department head or even starting your own practice. The demand for youth and family therapy continues to rise due to increasing awareness around mental health.
