What does a Army officer?

(Leger officier) As an army officer, you play a crucial role within, for example, the Royal Army. Your responsibilities include leading a unit, developing operational strategies and coordinating exercises aimed at improving your team members' skills. The position requires not only physical and mental strength, but also excellent communication skills. You work in diverse environments, from national exercises to international missions, and must be able to perform well under pressure. The life of an army officer is dynamic and can vary from solving complex tactical issues to training new soldiers. What makes this role attractive is the opportunity to make an impact in your community and contribute to national security. You will collaborate with diverse colleagues from different backgrounds, which makes the position versatile and challenging. Additionally, much attention is paid to personal development and you get the chance to advance within the organization.

Required Education

For a position as army officer, an HBO or university education is required, with the Royal Military Academy (KMA) being the standard route. In secondary school, the Economics & Society (E&M) profile is most suitable, with attention to subjects such as mathematics, economics and social sciences that help with strategic thinking and management. The KMA offers a five-year education that combines technical, tactical and leadership skills. Although an HBO or WO degree is usually required for admission to officer training programs, in exceptional cases relevant work experience and proven leadership qualities can also count in the selection process.

Required Skills

Career Perspective

When you start in a military career, you usually begin as a cadet or non-commissioned officer to gain experience and develop leadership qualities. As an army officer, you can advance to higher ranks such as major, lieutenant colonel and eventually colonel, where you get increasingly more strategic responsibilities. Your career can expand to specializations such as intelligence service, logistics or international missions, or you can transition to civilian functions in security, government or business. The defense apparatus offers stable employment with good development opportunities and international experience.

AI Impact on the job

AI has a significant impact on the function of army officer by automating tasks such as data analysis and strategy development. Officers must now develop new skills, such as working with AI tools and data-driven decision making. These changes can make the role of officers more strategic and analytical, while reducing routine tasks. The job market outlook is mixed; there is likely a need for more technological training, but also for skills that are not easily automated, such as leadership and empathy.
