(Nederlands) The WO Dutch program offers an in-depth exploration of the Dutch language and literature, focusing on both historical and contemporary developments within these disciplines. Students learn the language from various perspectives, including linguistics, translation studies, and the analysis of literary texts. In addition to core subjects, students can delve into topics such as dialectology, multilingualism, and cultural studies. The program emphasizes critical thinking and analysis, preparing students for a career in diverse sectors. Through seminars, workshops, and independent research, students acquire not only linguistic skills but also broader cultural insights. Graduates have the opportunity to continue to a master's program or to start working directly in various professional environments.

A week as a student

Listen: a week in Dutch0:00 / 0:00

Your week starts on Monday with a big lecture — a class for lots of students at once. Sometimes there are a hundred students in one hall. The lecturer talks about the history of literature: how Dutch books and writers changed over the centuries. You listen, take notes, and think along. After the lecture, you get to work yourself: you read texts that go with the class.

On Tuesday you have linguistics. That subject is about how the Dutch language works — for example, how sentences are built up. You have a smaller seminar [a session with around twenty students where you actively take part]. Together you discuss a text or a language phenomenon — a pattern in the language. On Wednesday you work at home. You read articles, take notes, and think about an assignment on language proficiency, which means writing correctly and clearly.

Required Education

For the WO Dutch study program, you need a VWO diploma or a completed HBO foundation year. The Culture & Society (C&M) profile fits best with this program, as this profile emphasizes language, literature, and cultural subjects. Dutch at VWO level is a strict requirement for admission, as this forms the basis for your studies. If you don't have a VWO diploma, you can also be admitted to university through a 21+ exam or colloquium doctum.

Career Prospects

Graduates of WO Dutch find their way to diverse professional fields where language proficiency and analytical ability are central. Education forms the largest employer, where Dutch studies graduates work as Dutch teachers in secondary schools or as university lecturers. Additionally, the publishing world offers interesting opportunities as editor, proofreader, or copywriter at publishers, magazines, and digital media. The communication sector values the strong language and analysis skills of Dutch studies graduates. Many graduates work as communication advisor, spokesperson, or copywriter at government institutions, non-profit organizations, and companies. They also find employment in journalism and broadcasting as journalist, editor-in-chief, or program maker. Cultural institutions such as museums, libraries, and theaters offer opportunities for positions in cultural management, public relations, and education. Additionally, some choose a career in the translation and interpretation sector, or focus on language advisory and language policy at governments and international organizations. Expected Developments Opportunities lie in the growing need for quality content for digital platforms and increasing attention to language policy in a multilingual society. Threats arise from automation in the translation and proofreading sector, and budget cuts in education and the cultural sector that may limit the number of available positions.

Impact of AI on this program

AI has significant impact on the WO Dutch study program. The content of the study may shift toward digital literature, text analysis using algorithms, and studying the role of AI in language and communication. New topics such as ethics in AI, data management of text corpora, and human-machine interaction are becoming increasingly relevant. Career prospects for graduates are expanding into business, the tech sector, and digital media, where skills in AI and language technology are increasingly valued.
