What will you learn?

(Master Robotics) The Robotics master's program focuses on developing and controlling intelligent robots and automated systems. Students receive comprehensive training in both theoretical and practical aspects of robotics, covering topics such as machine learning, computer vision, and robot technology. The program gives students the opportunity to work with the latest technologies and innovations in the field, preparing them for careers in various sectors such as industry, healthcare, and SMEs. The program also includes project and research work, enabling students to develop teamwork and problem-solving skills. Graduates can apply their knowledge in practical situations, contributing to the development of new products and systems that improve our daily lives.

A week as a student

Listen: a week in Master Robotics0:00 / 0:00

Your week starts on Monday with a lecture on Robotics. A lecture is a large class where one teacher talks and you listen and take notes. There are often eighty or more students in the room. The teacher explains how robots move and calculate forces — this is called kinematics and dynamics. After the lecture, you go over the material at home, because a university master's (wo-master [research-oriented master's degree]) involves a lot of independent study.

Tuesday and Wednesday are all about project work and seminars. You work in a small group on a research assignment — for example, a robot that independently chooses a route. This requires a lot of discussion and dividing up tasks. On Wednesday you attend a Machine Learning lecture, where you learn how a robot teaches itself from data — meaning large amounts of information. You also complete small programming assignments to practise the theory.

Required Education

For admission to the Master Robotics, you need a completed WO bachelor's degree, preferably in a technical field such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or applied physics. The VWO profile Nature & Technology (N&T) best aligns with this study, as it provides you with a strong foundation in mathematics and physics. Mathematics B and physics are essential for this master's, and knowledge of computer science is strongly recommended. If you don't have a technical WO bachelor's degree, you may still be admitted if you can demonstrate proven experience in programming and robotics, but this is assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Core Subjects

Career Prospects

After completing the Master Robotics, various career opportunities open up across a wide range of sectors. Graduates typically find work as robotics engineers, AI specialists, automation engineers, or research & development engineers. The automotive industry, manufacturing sector, and logistics offer numerous opportunities for implementing robotic solutions. Additionally, there are opportunities in healthcare for medical robotics, in aerospace for autonomous systems, and at technology companies focused on consumer robots. Many graduates begin their careers at large technology companies, engineering firms, or innovative start-ups. Research institutions and universities also offer interesting positions for those who want to focus on fundamental research. Business services increasingly seek consultants with robotics expertise for automation projects. Expected Developments Opportunities lie especially in the increasing automation of work processes and the growing demand for intelligent systems across all sectors. The development of Industry 4.0, autonomous vehicles, and service robotics creates new markets. Threats may arise from rapid technological developments that require continuous training, and potential economic headwinds that could slow investments in new technologies. International competition requires ongoing innovation and specialization.

Impact of AI on this program

AI is transforming the Master Robotics through the integration of machine learning and autonomous systems in curricula, which is essential for modern robotics. New topics such as neural networks, data analysis, and AI ethics are gaining importance. Graduates will be more competent in developing intelligent robots, giving them more opportunities in emerging sectors such as autonomous vehicles and smart manufacturing. This results in significantly improved career prospects, with growing demand for experts who can implement AI-driven technologies.
