Livestock farming

After completing MBO Animal Husbandry you can work as an employee or business manager at livestock farms, animal feed companies or organizations focused on animal welfare. Many graduates find work as stable workers, livestock farmers, animal nutrition advisors or technical specialists at suppliers of stable equipment. Positions at inspection services, manure processing companies and agricultural service providers are also among the possibilities. The sector also offers opportunities in organic livestock farming, precision agriculture and at companies focused on animal health and welfare. Some graduates choose to take over or start their own livestock farm. Work can also be found at government organizations such as the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority or at research institutes. Expected Developments Opportunities lie in the growing demand for sustainable and animal-friendly livestock farming methods, digitalization and automation of stable processes, and specialization in organic production. The development of new technologies and precision livestock farming creates opportunities for technically skilled professionals. Threats include the decline in the number of livestock farms due to scale enlargement, strict environmental legislation resulting in business closures, and social pressure for reduction of livestock numbers. The nitrogen problem and climate goals lead to structural downsizing of the sector, causing the number of jobs to decrease.
