(Accountmanager) As an account manager, you maintain strong relationships with existing clients and acquire new clients for the organization. You are responsible for understanding client needs and offering tailored solutions. Daily, you receive clients, give presentations, and negotiate contracts and prices. You work closely with the marketing team to develop sales strategies and are also involved in preparing quotes. Your impact is crucial for increasing revenue and improving customer satisfaction, which contributes to the overall growth of the company.
For a position as account manager, you typically need an HBO or university education in a field such as commercial economics, business administration, or marketing. If you are doing HAVO or VWO, choose the Economics & Society (E&M) profile, where mathematics and economics are important subjects for understanding financial concepts and market analyses. A strong foundation in Dutch is also essential due to the intensive client communication and presentation skills required. While formal education is preferred, candidates with relevant work experience in sales or customer service may sometimes also be considered, especially at companies that offer internal training programs.
As an account manager, you build on experience as a junior sales consultant, customer service employee, or business developer. From this role, you can advance to senior account manager, key account manager for large clients, or sales manager with leadership responsibilities. Many account managers also make the transition to commercial director or start their own consultancy firms. The demand for experienced account managers remains strong due to the growing focus on customer relationships and digital sales.
AI transforms the role of account managers by automating routine tasks such as data analysis and reporting, allowing them to spend more time on customer relationships and strategic advice. Important new skills include the ability to interpret and integrate AI tools into customer communication. The demand for account managers is expected to increase at companies that embrace AI, but pressure may also arise on lower functions due to automation, leading to a shift in the skills necessary in the job market.
