(Salesmanager) As a sales manager, you are responsible for developing and executing sales strategies. You lead a team and build strong customer relationships. With a solid Bachelor's background in sales or marketing, you offer your organization the opportunity to grow by launching strategic events and promotions.
For a position as sales manager, you usually need an HBO or university education in a field such as commercial economics, business administration, marketing or communication. If you progress through HAVO/VWO, the Economics & Society (E&M) profile is most suitable, where subjects like economics, mathematics and management & organization form a good foundation. In some cases, extensive commercial experience and proven leadership qualities can compensate for a lower educational level. Additional courses in sales, management or marketing significantly strengthen your profile.
As a sales manager, you usually enter from positions such as sales representative, account manager or business developer. After several years of experience, you can advance to senior sales manager, regional sales director or commercial director. Many sales managers also make the transition to general management or start their own business. The field offers excellent prospects due to the continuous demand for commercial talent in virtually every sector.
AI is transforming the role of the sales manager by automating tasks such as lead generation, customer analysis and reporting. This shifts the focus and responsibilities toward strategic thinking and developing customer relationships. New skills such as data analysis and knowledge of AI tools are becoming increasingly important. The job market outlook is mixed; while some positions disappear due to automation, new opportunities also arise for sales managers who can adapt to these technologies.
