(AI Auditor) As an AI Auditor, you investigate AI systems for compliance with the EU AI Act, AVG/GDPR and sector-specific regulations. You test high-risk AI systems for bias, transparency, traceability and documentation, conducting risk assessments and reporting non-compliance. You work closely with legal teams, IT departments and compliance officers to develop AI governance frameworks. Additionally, you advise organizations on meeting the mandatory audit requirements that will apply from 2026 under the EU AI Act.
You need at least an HBO bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Law, Business Administration or a related field. A VWO diploma with the Economics & Society (E&M) or Science & Technology (N&T) profile provides a good foundation, with subjects like mathematics, computer science and social studies being important. Additional certifications in IT audit (such as CISA), privacy (CIPP/E) or AI ethics are highly desirable. Work experience in IT audit, compliance or legal advisory can sometimes compensate for formal education.
You often start as an IT auditor, compliance officer or legal advisor with a focus on data protection. From this role, you grow into an AI Auditor through specialization in AI legislation and ethics. With experience, you can advance to Senior AI Auditor or AI Compliance Manager, leading teams and providing strategic advice. The peak of your career could be as Chief AI Officer or Partner at a specialized AI compliance consultancy.
AI has a paradoxical impact on your role - it creates both the necessity for your position and new tools to perform it. Automated compliance monitoring tools help you screen large datasets and detect bias patterns that are difficult to find manually. AI-powered audit software can identify documentation gaps and generate risk scores for different AI systems. At the same time, your human expertise remains crucial for ethical assessment, context interpretation and navigating complex legal issues.
