(Financieel Manager) As a Financial Manager, you are a crucial link within the organization that focuses on. In this role, you are responsible for managing and analyzing financial processes and budgets, working daily with a team of financial professionals and collaborating with various departments within the company. Your day often begins with reviewing the previous day's financial reports, adjusting forecasts based on recent data, and consulting with other managers about their budgets and financial needs. You work in a dynamic environment where numbers and analyses help shape strategies and decisions. What's interesting about this position is that you not only interpret numbers, but also actively contribute to the growth and development of the organization. Your impact is significant: your analyses and recommendations are essential for making data-driven decisions that determine the company's direction. However, there are challenges you regularly encounter. Think about effectively dealing with market fluctuations, strict deadlines, and complex reporting. Additionally, you have the responsibility to implement improvements in financial processes where necessary, ensuring efficiency and accuracy are maintained. In short, as a Financial Manager, you play a key role in the organization's financial health, while working every day to optimize processes and ensure strategic objectives are met.
Your day starts at 8.30 am at the office. First, you open your laptop and check yesterday's financial reports. These are overviews of all income and expenses. You quickly spot if anything unexpected happened. You work at a medium-sized production company in Eindhoven with around two hundred employees.
In the morning, you have a meeting with your team of three finance colleagues. Together, you discuss the forecasts — predictions about how much money the company will earn or spend. You use Excel and a financial software programme like SAP or AFAS for this. After that, you have a quick chat with the purchasing manager. He wants to know if there is room in the budget for new machines.
For the Financial Manager position, a university education (WO) in Business Economics, Financial Management, Accounting, or Econometrics is required. If you're doing VWO, you preferably choose the Economics & Society (E&M) profile, where mathematics and economics are important subjects for your further development. Many employers value additional qualifications such as an MBA, CFA certification, or chartered accountant (RA) training. While a university education is standard for this senior position, in exceptional cases extensive experience in financial management roles combined with relevant certifications can also provide access to this position.
As a Financial Manager, you typically come from positions such as Financial Analyst, Senior Bookkeeper, or Controller, where you have built your expertise in financial analysis and reporting. From this senior position, you can advance to CFO, Finance Director, or even CEO positions within various sectors. Logical next steps also include specialization roles such as Treasury Manager or M&A Manager at larger organizations. The field offers excellent prospects due to the constant demand for financial expertise in an increasingly complex business environment.
AI transforms the role of the Financial Manager by automating tasks such as data analysis, reporting, and predictive modeling. This shifts the focus to strategic advice and making data-driven decisions. New skills such as data processing, knowledge of AI tools, and analytical thinking become crucial. The labor market will adapt, with financial managers with AI skills being in demand, while positions requiring routine tasks may disappear due to automation.
